How To Shutdown PC At Specific Time OR Via Shortcut

Usually, while using program/applications (i.e. when downloading or uploading files, etc) then you won’t be able to shut down your pc until the completion of the process as it might corrupt the file being downloaded and/or uploaded. In the result you end up starting the process from the beginning. In order to get rid of this problem you can set time to shutdown your pc which let you automatically shutdown the pc at defined time.

Let suppose you want to shutdown pc without human interaction at 23:00 ; All you have to do is to follow the steps given below:

  • Goto “Start” menu
  • In “Run” type this “at 23:00 shutdown –s without quotes
  • If you want to cancel this timer then type “shutdown -a” in “Run”

You can also shutdown pc on network but this will work only if you have administrative access or you know user and password of specific pc. For this you have to type the code “shutdown –s –m\\pcname –t60” in “Run”. Here replace “pcname” with the specific pc name.

To Create Shortcut for shutdown timer

By following the steps you can create shortcut for shutdown timer:

  • Minimize all applications and right click on desktop
  • From the menu choose “New” and in sub-menu select “shortcut
  • A window will appear, in this window type “shutdown -s -t 3600” without the quotes and after that click next button.
  • The time can be changed i.e. 3600 second, (its equivalent to 60 min or 1 hr).
  • You can also change icon by right click on shortcut then properties and change icon.

Note: If you want to create multiple shortcut than its possible. For example a pc can have shutdown shortcuts for 45 minutes,  1hour, 1.5hours, 3 hours etc.
